Disappointment for O’Hagan and Trimble
A bright day greeted the crews on the entry list for the event, with light winds providing perfect dry conditions. A reflection on last year’s event, which had to be shortened due to deteriorating weather. Tyre choice however today was to be made very simple………….
The routing for
today’s event was composed of six stages all asphalt. Each of the stages
were of varying length. There was also some minor route changes included
to keep the crews on their toes. A good all round format. A recce of stage
one was completed prior to the event, this was met with approval from
the competitors and a well taken thought by the event organisers.
In class C (Up to 2000cc FWD) there were seven crews entered. First away
was the number 4 car of Matt Bettridge co-driven by Bob Clague, their
first event together. At number 9 was the Astra of Nigel Cannell and Nick
Kaighan.
Pat Bettridge
and Paul Gelling were in their VW Golf at number 19. Previous class winners
followed at number 22, the VW Golf of John O’Hagan with Ashley Trimble
alongside.
Honours in this class must come from these crews, and as past results
confirm usually has!!!
The event hadn’t long got underway when the retirement list started. The
VW Golf of number 19 seed Pat Bettridge was spotted at the finish of stage
2. Shortly afterwards Nigel Cannell joined the retirements parked up on
stage 4 with mechanical troubles. By this time the little Peugeot 206
of Matt Bettridge was leading the class, the crew and car adapting to
the stages and each other.
However, also on
stage 4, John O’Hagan / Ashley Trimble struck trouble just 300 metres
from the flying finish line, Gearbox problems causing their exit from
the event. The abrasive stages proving a challenge, Bettridge continued
to dominate the class during the afternoon stages and securing a well
deserved class win, to add to his Manx rally championship points with
two rounds to go.
O’Hagan / Trimble will miss the next round, as it clashes with the Cheviot
stages in Northumberland, a round of the MSA asphalt championship which
Trimble is entered.
The duo will be on the entry list for the last round of the Manx rally
championship, the Duke stages, which is held on 30th November-1st December.
John and Ashley would like to thank their sponsors I.T.Works, Taylor
Clarke and Kris Clay at www.isleofmanphotgraphs.com for their continuing
support, and to the event organisers, marshals and timekeepers for their
time in running this excellent event.
