Great weather, shame about the gearbox

It was the first rally for John O’Hagan since last year, and it was also a first for the Manx F2 stock car champion Peter Corkish sitting in calling the notes.

As last year, the weather was ideal for rallying, dry and sunny, there were a few spots of rain earlier in the day but nothing came of it.
Unusually, there were a number of entries in class C (Front wheel drive up to 2 litres) in fact ten in total, usual crews included car number 6 of Matt Bettridge and Ashley Trimble. Father of Matt, Pat Bettridge with Paul Gelling at number 12, and of course John O’Hagan and Peter Corkish in their Volkswagen Golf at number 19.

Things didn’t go so well on the first stage for John and Peter, as they hit some tyres on a chicane and had to reverse to remove one from underneath the car which lost them some time.
It didn’t get any better, as on stage five the crew lost second gear and there was a rattling noise was coming from the gearbox.
John and Peter were lying 19th overall before this happened and dropped six places to 24th overall.

Later the crew lost reverse gear and also lost the end cap from the gearbox, which caused the loss of a large amount of gear oil.
John and Peter decided to continue with the last few stages knowing that the gearbox could seize at anytime.
The pair finished the rally 23rd overall, but was very lucky to get to the end with the damaged gearbox.

Class C honours went to Nigel Cannell and Nicholas Kaighin in their Vauxhall Astra finishing 6th overall.

John and Peter would like to thank sponsors I.T Works, Rallypac.com and also Taylor Clarke for their continuing support.

They would also like to thank the event organisers, marshals and timekeepers for their time running this top single venue event.
